Project Manager
DANIEL H. HORTON, RN

Dan grew up in a large farming family in Western Oregon. Following high school he studied for two years at a Christian college. This was followed by studying and graduating from Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon.
Upon graduation in 1967, Dan was married to one of his classmates, Maryanna. Shortly after graduation, Dan spent the next two years as an officer in the United States Army Nurse Corps. He spent one year in Viet Nam where he was head nurse of an emergency room. The time spent in the military was great preparation professionally for his life’s work in a Third World medical practice. After military service, the Hortons spent two years in a small town in northwestern Oregon, where they practiced their profession.
In 1974, the Hortons left the States with their four small children for the Philippines where they spent more than a year studying the Tagalog language near Manila. In April 1983, their fifth and final child was born.
During his years in the Philippines, Dan’s primary involvement has been with a small remote hospital. Dan’s responsibilities have varied with the needs of the hospital. He supervised construction of the hospital and compound buildings during the early years and has often been involved with the maintenance and supervision of the hospital compound. He has been the hospital administrator since 1983. He has extracted teeth and helped with mobile clinics in villages where there were no medical services available. Dan assists with emergencies and surgeries at the hospital to the present day.
Through the years, Dan has had the opportunity to travel in several Asian countries including Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Through these experiences, he has a broad knowledge of Asian people, culture, and their needs. Living, working and traveling in Asia has prepared him to be the project manager of Medical Compassion International. Dan hopes to use his background and knowledge through Medical Compassion International to make a difference in the physical, educational and spiritual lives of people in the Asia.
